How To Make Your Sangeet Unforgettable

Your Sangeet celebrations may be the first in the series of a bajillion events – so let’s kick off your wedding in an incredible way! We’ve combed through all the Happy Shappy weddings and vendors, to bring you our best sangeet tips to make it unforgettable. All you need to do is show up in your dancing shoes, and leave the inspiration up to us!

Your Outfit

All eyes are definitely going to be on you – so dress the part! And we don’t just mean something that photographs beautifully, but something that you will feel comfortable and at ease in. For your sangeet, forget the super heavy lehenga and heavy jewellery – go for something light enough you can twirl all night in! We would recommend an anarkali style suit that flares out beautifully from the waist, or for something a tad trendier, a dhoti or tulip shalwar coupled with a hip-length, embellished blouse. Whichever you choose, definitely go with bright colors and the comfiest of dancing shoes so you’re not stuck on the sidelines all evening!

Your Makeup

The evening is going to involve lots of masti and boogying – so keep your look fresh and fuss free. Our favorite sangeet face is dewy skin, without heavy foundation caked on. Even out your skin with a luminizing primer, and then apply a sheer layer of coverage. For the eyes, go simple – no dramatic smoky eyes here! Eyes tightlined with liner and tons of mascara for flirty, fluttery lashes. Add a pop of color to your look with a bright lip in coral, fuchsia or red – whichever complements your outfit. And lock it all into place with a finishing spray (like Urban Decay All Nighter) so it doesn’t budge through all the dancing!

Lighting

If your sangeet is an evening affair, set the mood with gorgeous lighting. We love the soft glow of lanterns and candles all around your venue – plus they add a beautiful element to your décor, regardless of the theme. Lanterns and candles work with both ethnic and modern decorations. A very cool trend we’re seeing these days are fairy lights! Think a canopy of fairy lights hung over the dance floor, adding a romantic story book feel to the evening – one of our best sangeet tips to make it an amazing evening!

Seating

With all the dancing and mingling your guests will be doing, give them someplace relaxing to unwind! When thinking of creative seating options, we recommend floor seating with lots of cushions for your guests to lounge on. Match the colors to the theme of your wedding –  whether you choose peacock themed jewel tones, or bright, cheery reds and yellows – it’ll add tons of cool to your event. And since you’ll have all that fun floor seating, throw a few hookahs into the mix! For the bride and groom, rather than having them sit on a formal stage, how about a pretty jhula decorated with flowers? The perfect throne for the happy couple!

Gifts for Guests

Send your guests off with a lovely memory of your sangeet! For the ladies, we recommend having a churi-wala set up a stand where the girls can match their outfits to glass bangles. They add an elegant touch to Indian outfits, and will be a sweet keepsake as well. And for the gents on your guest list, how about matching stoles to accessorize their Indian or Westernwear with? Pick one color that complements your sangeet décor, and have all the boys drape it around their necks. We love that look on the fellas!

Fresh Flowers

If it’s one thing we all agree on, it’s that fresh flowers bring a certain happiness and beauty to your events. We love the fragrance of jasmine wafting through the air on a cool evening, and think it’s a must have at your sangeet. Check out Happy Shappy’s décor partners for inspiration on how to incorporate them into your celebration! Whether you decorate with flowers, or have gajras for the ladies at your event, fresh flowers are a wonderful way to make your sangeet beautiful!

Food

Let’s be honest, we attend weddings for the food. And ok, also because we love you. But serving yummy food is very important to your guests, and it’s often what they remember the most. One of our best sangeet tips is to serve Indian street foods, done up very elegantly. Host a chaat counter, gol gappas in pretty platters, and fresh samosas with a variety of stuffings. And for drinks, create a signature cocktail for your event in the colors of your sangeet! Happy Shappy’s incredible caterers can hook you up with all of these!
